The Soar Tackle Lowdown: VDE Supercup Groundbait Guide
Van Den Eynde Supercup is a legendary all-rounder, made famous by the master himself, Bob Nudd MBE. It has probably accounted for more match wins worldwide than any other groundbait in history. Whether you're on a lake, river, or canal, this is a versatile staple that perfectly suits almost any venue.
The Lowdown on Supercup
Supercup is a low-feed groundbait, designed to attract fish through a sweet aroma and a visual cloud without filling them up. Its real magic is its versatility; it can be used on its own for a light approach or mixed with other groundbaits to adjust how they work.
Controlled Delivery
While it's a light mix, Supercup can be dampened down to get to the bottom in water up to 10ft deep before breaking down quickly. This creates that perfect carpet of loose feed that bream and skimmers love to settle on.
The key is in the mixing—get it right each ball will survive the throw and the descent, then release your feed the moment they hit the deck.
The "On the Drop" Cloud
If you mix Supercup on the sloppy side, it creates a massive, lingering cloud. This is a "must-do" on canals or shallow rivers when you want to intercept fish as they follow the bait down through the layers.
This approach is deadly for roach and skimmers in the upper layers, especially in summer when fish are more active and feeding at multiple depths.
Versatile Mix
Because it's a softer, less sticky bait, it's the perfect tool for "breaking open" heavier mixes. If your current choice is too be to bindy, adding Supercup will help it work much faster.
This is particularly useful when you're working with VDE Secret or other heavy groundbaits and need to adjust the breakdown rate for changing conditions.
Soar Tackle Tactical Mixes
The Tough Winter Canal Mix
For a light, low-feed approach when the fishing is hard, mixing Supercup with VDE Special is a classic combination. It provides maximum attraction with zero chance of overfeeding wary fish in clear, cold water.
This is my go-to when bites are hard to come by and every fish counts.
The Deep Water Carpet
Mix 50/50 with VDE Turbo. This adds the weight needed for deep or towing water, while the Supercup ensures it releases your feed the moment it hits the deck.
Perfect for those deeper medium flow river swims where you need to create a holding area on the bottom.
Pacey Water Mix 50/50
Mix 50/50 with VDE Secret for a great balling-in mix on a running pole line. You get the weight and binding from Secret with the sweet attraction and controlled breakdown from Supercup.
This is an awesome mix on rivers and drains, and can work well for Bream & Skimmers. Read my complete Secret mixing guide for detailed ratios and flow adjustments.
Quick Setup Guide
| Venue / Style | Mixing Goal | Tactical Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Deeper slow Rivers (to 10ft) | Carpet Feed | Mix firm to reach the bottom before it breaks; ideal for Bream. |
| Tough Winter Canal | Low-Feed / Finesse | Mix with VDE Special for wary fish in cold water. |
| Shallow / Canals | Visual Cloud | Mix sloppy to create a vertical cloud for fish "on the drop." |
Top Tip: The Three-Stage Mix
Supercup will take on a good amount of water. Always best mix it in three stages:
- Initial damp up – Add water gradually and mix thoroughly
- Stand time – Let it stand for 5 minutes run through a riddle and add more water
- Final check – Assess consistency and adjust if needed
Never rush this process getting your groundbait right is an important part of fishing jigsaw.
Session Planning
Before you head out, consider:
- Venue depth – Deeper water needs firmer mixing or a heavier blend partner
- Target species – Bream and skimmers love the sweet profile; roach respond well too
- Water temperature – Colder water = lighter feed approach with Supercup
- Clarity – Clear water benefits from the visual cloud on shallow venues
